Like Meb, I Wanna Be Like Meb: Training Secrets From One of the GOATs (VIDEO)
Meb Keflezighi has had a storied career as one of the best marathon runners of all-time. The UCLA alumni is an Olympian (finished 2nd overall in 2004) and the only American to win both the New York and Boston marathons. Ever wonder how he trains for marathons? Luckily, I unearthed this YouTube video from 2014 which covers his intense training regimen.
As you could see, the man works hard. In addition to running 12 (!) times a week, Meb preaches the importance of strength training and nutrition. For example, strengthening your core leads to improved mechanics, cadence and overall form. Also, his diet helps him recover properly which is a big deal considering his mature age.
Meb’s training location of choice, Mammoth Lake, which based on my savvy Wikipedia has an elevation of 7,880 feet above sea level, increases his oxygen capacity so that when it comes to running on flatter land on race day, he makes it looks so easy.
Most importantly, you’ll notice that Meb still uses a bike pacer to go along with him, proving that even a beast like Meb still needs support. And think about how cool it must be to be Meb’s pacer!
So many takeaways from this video, I think I have enough material to start my Olympic career now.
